Listen to Bauhaus’ Previously Unreleased Bela Session Track “Some Faces”

Bauhaus’ Beck Studios Bela session is out today on vinyl in celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary. Along with the release comes the sharing of that session’s recording of “Some Faces”. This is a Bauhaus track that until now, could only be heard via poor quality bootlegs, such as the one from the Northampton band’s Racecourse Pavilion, gig on March 3rd 1979.

Listen to the studio version from January 26th, 1979 below:

Here is the complete EP available to listen to via Spotify:

And Bandcamp:

During the Bela Session, 3 other tracks were recorded besides the titular “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, and the rare “Some Faces”, such as the ska reggae inspired song  “Harry”, (named after Blondie’s Debbie Harry) which would later on the Kick in Eye (Searching For Satori) EP, and the CD version of Mask. “Bite My Hip” would later be re-recorded as the single “Lagartija Nick”. And also included on the EP is the original version of “Boys”.

A bit of trivia, the EP’s sleeve, which is an inverted version of the original version of Bela’s Lugosi’s Dead single, actually is a grainy copy of a still from the D. W. Griffith film The Sorrows of Satan.

Meanwhile, Peter Murphy and David J continue on the Ruby Celebration Tour, playing Bauhaus’ In The Flat Field in its entirety.

Fact Check: Did Peter Murphy Throw Glass Bottles at Audience in Stockholm and Punch a Police Officer?

$

0

FALSE

On December 12th, 2018, Peter Murphy played a well received show at mid sized venue Nalen in Stockholm, Sweden for his 40 Years of Bauhaus Ruby Celebration Tour, featuring David J.

The concert that night ended slightly early, with several songs cut from the final encore of the setlist due to the vocals being disabled on the PA.

The next morning new stories broke that Peter had been kicked out of the venue for destroying equipment and assaulting guests with glass water bottles thrown from stage. A person on social media claimed to have been hit by one of the water bottles, cutting his cheek and requiring stitches.

A shocking photo, followed by video footage, emerged along with this claim, showing the 61 year old singer confronting what some took to be Swedish Police and security outside the venue. In the footage we see Murphy, being told to “calm it down, mate,” with Murphy responding with , “You think you got a big c**k? F*** you, you f***ing Swedish c**t.”

Murphy, after demanding not to be touched has someone put their hand on his shoulder and the singer then responds with a punch. Security then tackle the singer, bringing him down with a chokehold.

Since much of the news reporting of this event has been inaccurate, in part due to mistranslation of Swedish news articles, and in part due to some dishonesty, we have decided to break down the facts of the evening, showing that both parties are to blame.

FACTS:

Bottles Thrown

  • No glass bottles were thrown. Murphy threw plastic bottles and plastic cups of beer. Some of the plastic bottles were closed, such as the one that struck the concert goer on the cheek and caused a minor cut that bled.
  • No photos of the injury at the time of occurrence were taken as far as we know.
  • The plastic bottle that struck the individual on the cheek, was thrown in overhand arch by Murphy as the attendee was standing at the bar during the song “Stigmata Martyr”. This has been filmed from many angles facing Peter Murphy.
  • Peter Murphy told his management that the reason he threw water bottles was he was trying to get the people/audience excited and liven the room up, and get them engaged with the show.
  • Murphy spoke to the audience via his microphone that the people at the bar at the end of the room need to listen to the music and watch the gig.
  • By the end of the concert the crowd was throwing cups of beer and water bottles too, which supports Murphy’s claim about his motives for throwing the water.

“Glas” in Swedish is more accurately translated as “cup” depending on the context.

Light

  • Peter Murphy did in fact kick a stage light breaking it and shattering glass. No glass came anywhere near concert goers however.

Sound

  • Murphy is alleged to have complained about a buzzing sound in his monitor by the venue. Tour staff for Peter Murphy have stated the sound was good until the end. This is reflected by the opinions of several concert attendees we interviewed.
  • A writer for Gaffa, a new site often referenced in this story, complained that Murphy’s performance was off and that he was shouting and screaming more so than singing. We must note that Peter Murphy was performing Bauhaus’ debut album In The Flat Field in its entirety for the first half of the set. No one we interviewed complained about the performance in this way other than the writer for Gaffa, who seems unfamiliar with Bauhaus’s material.
  • This same writer might have been mistranslated regarding what she wrote about the show:

“I låt åtta, Stigmata Martyr började han kasta glas och flaskor mot mixerbordet. fyra-fem stycken säkert, varav någon flaska for rätt in i baren.”

The word “glas” in Swedish can be mistranslated as “glass” in this context, but in this usage is better translated as “cup”, according to a native Swedish speaker that works for our site. (I myself previously had been confused about this translation during a Swedish backyard BBQ last summer).

In that same article, the writer also mentions that the ‘bands own technician ended the show’. The technician was in fact the tour manager.
    • Despite thinking Peter Murphy was cranky, aggressive, or not having a good time, most audience members claim he gave a great performance (see Treatment of Audience section).
    • A water bottle hit a member of Peter Murphy’s crew who was working the sound board in his chest, exploding water on him and the board. He quickly tried to clean it up.
    • The PA was not completely broken. Video from the concert shows that the vocal levels were low starting around “She’s In Parties”. The guitar and bass levels were fine. Given that open water bottles and beer bottles were being thrown by the audience at this time, some directed at the PA and Light desk, it is possible that their was other damage to the PA that was not entirely caused by Murphy, but band management concedes Peter inciting the audience to throw water.
    • Nalen have been caught in a lie to local Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, where Nalen spokesperson Jennie Monie says:

“Afterwards we’ve understood that he first kicked down a lamp on stage. Then he threw water bottles on audience, staff and also against our technicians. One water bottle that was open broke the mixer board.”

Monie is claiming the technician was a Nelan employee, when in fact it was the tour manager. No venue staff were hit by any water bottles thrown by Peter Murphy.

Treatment of Audience

  • During the opening song “Double Dare”, the first song of the set, Peter is shown taking a person’s cell phone away flipping them off while also gesturing playfully. See video footage courtesy of Youtube user bgrrrlie.

  • During the final song of the 15 song setlist, “The Passion of Lovers”, Peter is seen holding the hands of several people from the same spot as before, possibly the person whom he took the phone from earlier, as he is seen gesturing for a particular person’s hand to hold.

    • Peter leans in further to serenade a black woman holding her hand, while trying to sing “The Passion of Lovers” with low levels on the vocal.
    • Ultimately, Peter’s performance during the concert matches reports of his onstage persona dating back to Bauhaus’ first gigs in Luton and Northampton during 1979.

The character of “Peter Murphy” is arch – he’s a dionysian anti-hero!

Setlist:

  • Double Dare
  • In the Flat Field
  • A God in an Alcove
  • Dive
  • Spy in the Cab
  • Small Talk Stinks
  • St. Vitus Dance
  • Stigmata Martyr
  • Nerves
  • Burning from the Inside
  • Silent Hedges
  • Bela Lugosi’s Dead
  • She’s in Parties
  • Adrenalin
  • The Passion of Lovers

Muscle in Plastic…

After the concert:

  • Both the venue and Peter’s management concede Peter goes to his dressing room after being requested to leave the venue immediately.
  • Venue staff said they called the police, and demand Peter Murphy or the whole tour change hotels (this is unclear).
  • The audience members were then cleared out of the venue. Murphy’s management does not acknowledge the venue’s claim that fans were still present asking for autographs and that Peter was abusive to them
  • Peter while talking to the second of two tour managers on the tour is dragged outside with security on each of his arms despite the protests of the tour manager who claims to have been arranging with Peter a taxi back to the hotel and planned to leave in 5 minutes.
  • Before this occurred the secondary tour manager was talking to fans that told her they really enjoyed the show. No fans have come forward stating Peter Murphy threatened them.
  • Peter Murphy was removed from the venue alone without a jacket wearing only a thin shirt during freezing weather.
  • Right after being brought to the street, Peter Murphy curses at a member of the security team involved with removing him so forcefully, referring to the size of the man’s genitals implying that the security guard was displaying machismo or toxic masculinity.
  • Peter is touched after demanding not to be touched again, and he throws a punch.
  • Peter is then tackled by several members of the security team.
  • One of the members of the security team is a Ordningsvakt, who many in the press mistook for a police officer.
  • It is possible that the Ordningsvakt was called by the venue to remove Peter, although many are retained for events in Sweden.
  • Peter Murphy was not arrested, and no charges were pressed at the venue.
  • Peter Murphy and his crew were not informed of any injury resulting from the plastic bottle being thrown.
  • Nalen later solicited members of the audience to press charges against Peter Murphy. One police report was filed.
  • Peter Murphy arrived at his hotel, and departed for Athens, Greece, the next morning for another concert in that city. The show was sold out and there were no problems during the performance.

Conclusion

  • Peter Murphy was at fault by throwing the plastic bottles and causing injury to the cheek of the concert goer standing by the bar. Despite the fact that singers like Iggy Pop, and Marilyn Manson are known to still engage in plastic bottle throwing, this was a full water bottle and still caused harm, despite there being no intent to do so.
  • Nalen chose not to address replacing the stage light, and the issues with the PA, (if the PA was indeed completely broken) and chose not to arrange drafting any invoice with the tour management in the office post show, and and instead decided to be uncivil.
  • Nalen should not have thrown Peter Murphy out on the street like they did, and their response to the press has been in some parts misleading and in others outright dishonest.
  • One music European music industry professional with personal ties to Stockholm as well has indicated to us that the venue has a history of heavy-handed security tactics with touring artists, and that this incident came as no surprise.
  • Removing Peter out of the street like Nalen did was unsafe, and a legal liability. We are calling out Nalen’s claim that Peter threatened guests as being an outright lie used to justify the way they vented their anger. The situation could have been mediated with tour management, and Nalen chose instead to use threats and force to deal with a situation that could have been resolved peacefully.

Love for Stockholm

Despite this, we concede that Nalen is an important part of the Stockholm music scene, and is supportive of many great small post-punk acts that are in the city, a city that is overflowing with musical talent. Without Nalen Stockholm’s nightlife would suffer, as they contribute so much to the city.

Nalen in fact helps and supports many of the friends of Post-Punk.com in Stockholm.

Vi älskar dig Stockholm, du är en av de bästa städerna i världen för post-punk och goth musik!

Post-Punk Invades Paris Fashion Week with Live Performances from Whispering Sons and more!

During the recent Paris Menswear Fashion Week, post-punk’ music’s historical influence on fashion was celebrated by many veteran designers, several of which booked live music acts to perform during their runway shows.

One such occurrence was during Belgian avant-garde fashion designer Raf Simons runway show. Simons, who has had post punk inspirations in his collections for years—notably his use of New Order and Joy Division prints (which even included a Substance Umbrella), made his love for Joy Division known once again by opening his show with Joy Division’s 1980 track “Atmosphere”, where the models did indeed walk in silence leading into the surprise recruitment his fellow countrymen Whispering Sons to perform live during his show.

Whispering Sons are one of the best new post-punk bands out right now, having recently released their critically acclaimed debut LP Image at the end of 2018, following several fantastic EP’s and singles.

Quite possibly the band’s tribute to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, with their log lady quote: “They move so slowly when they’re not afraid…”, in the album track “Alone”, coupled with the song “Got a Light”, was a further kinship with Simons, for the designer’s AW19 show also featured a “damn fine tribute to David Lynch”.

Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo during her label Comme Des Garçons’ Homme Plus show enlisted Dark Synth duo Vowws, to perform during for a collection whose theme was “finding beauty in the dark”.

As Vogue noted, the sentiment “I fucking hate genre descriptions.” stated by Rizz of Vowws, sync’s perfectly with the ethos of Rei Kawakubo Tokyo-based fashion label, whose work is also always very out there, and deconstructive and questioning of fashion.

Hedi Slimane for French ready to wear fashion label Celine augmented the designer Slimane had been releasing with Yves  Saint Laurent two years ago when he was designer there, but with a post-punk flair inspired by dark new-wave fashion, and no-wave.

The intent to pay homage to No Wave could not have been any more clear, as James Chance himself was enlisted to play saxophone during the runway show.

Peter Murphy to Perform David Bowie Tribute Concert

One more show has been added to close out Peter Murphy’s highly anticipated and thrice delayed two-week San Francisco residency, where former Bauhaus vocalist will perform his solo albums in their entirety, plus three “Mr. Moonlight” sets of Bauhaus music.

The final show, which has been  just been announced will see the gothic rock progenitor honoring the Thin White Duke himself,  by performing select songs from the catalog of the music legend.

Says Peter of the show:

Now that all and sundry have fallen off the David Bowie tribute band wagon, I thought I’d do my own.”

Murphy, who is no stranger to the work of Bowie, had cemented the comparisons between himself and his band Bauhaus by covering Ziggy Stardust for a single release on October 5th, 1982.

The single release featured on its sleeve the band’s usage of the Bauhaus art school logo combined with Bowie’s Aladdin Sane Lightning Bolt. It is interesting to note that the Art Museum, Martin Gropius Bau, in Berlin named after Architect Martin Gropius, hosted a David Bowie exhibition in 2014. Martin Gropius was the great-uncle of architect and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius.

Bowie is still celebrated for his “residency” in the city, where he completed his Berlin trilogy of albums, Low, Heroes, and Lodger.

After leaving Berlin, Bowie would then adopt a new-wave persona for his next LP Scary Monsters, and appeared on Saturday Night Live wearing a Bauhaus art inspired inspired Tuxedo along with German singer Klaus Nomi.

In 1983, Bauhaus the band would share the screen with David Bowie in the Tony Scott Film The Hunger, performing their debut single Bela Lugosi’s Dead at the infamous nightclub Heaven, while Bowie and Catherine Deneuve hunt for victims—one of which was played by actress Anne Magnuson (a close friend of Klaus Nomi and a integral part of the New York post-punk scene).

Peter Murphy and bassist David J are currently on their US leg of their world tour, celebrating  Bauhaus’ 40th anniversary by performing the band’s debut LP In The Flat Field in its entirety.

After the close of the tour, Murphy begins his two-week residency in San Francisco, where the Bowie Tribute concert is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at San Francisco’s The Chapel.

Tickets go on sale at 2 p.m. PST today via Ticketfly.

The Passion of Covers…

Trip Hop legends Massive Attack continue with their tour unveiling another surprise cover during their ongoing 21st anniversary tour in celebration of their seminal album Mezzanine.

Not only do the honor the legacy of Cocteau Twins by reuniting with vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, who was featured on several tracks on the critically acclaimed album from 1998, but since their second night in Amsterdam on February 2nd, Massive Attack have dusted the cobwebs off of their cover of Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead.

The song is fitting tribute during Massive Attacks set, given that post-punk legends Bauhaus were also heavily influenced by Reggae.

Not only that, but Bauhaus was one of the first artists to be released on Cocteau Twins’ future label, paving the way from Fraser’s career which ultimately led to her collaboration with Massive Attack

Bauhaus bassist David J Haskins took to social media to remark at his delight about the cover:

“Robert (3D) Del Naja AKA, singer with Massive Attack once told me that he went with a 12 year old Tricky to see Bauhaus play in Bristol in the the early 80’s and that was the start of Massive Attack.

They are one of my all time favorite bands so this tribute makes my soul smile”

Previously, Massive Attack had only cover Bela Lugosi’s Dead only once before during a concert at The Park Avenue Armory in New York on September 30th, 2013 for a special collaboration with documentary film-maker Adam Curtis.

Below, check out video footage of Massive Attack performing Bela Lugosi’s Dead:

Gothic Rock icon Peter Murphy is making amends to his fans in San Francisco who’ve have waited nearly two years for the singer to grace The Chapel  for  his long awaited residency as the venue.

Between a vocal chord illness, and visa issues, the famed Bauhaus singer was at one point seen as to some unlikely to make due on his promise to play his solo records and Bauhaus classics during his thrice rescheduled 17 concert residency.

But now, with 2 nights left of his Bauhaus 40th Anniversary Tour with bassist David J Haskins and the residency set to commence next week, Murphy has decided to add one more concert to bookend the residency calendar, but this time upgraded to a much larger venue, where the Murph and Mr. Haskins will be performing Bauhaus’ debut album In the Flat Field and other Bauhaus classics.

Peter Murphy Cancels Orlando Bauhaus 40th Anniversary Makeup Date and David J and Curse Mackey Give an Improvised Set

Peter Murphy had to sit out his makeup date for 40 Years of Bauhaus Ruby Anniversary concert in Orlando last night, due to chronic pain he had been enduring on a tour that has been running non-stop since beginning in New Zealand and Australia last October.

The original date for Orlando was scheduled in February but cancelled at the last min due to Peter having to see a doctor for his condition.

Those who saw Peter last night, remarked that he was in noticeably bad shape, which had reportedly worsened since the previous gig in Santa Ana that followed the long awaited San Francisco Residency concerts.

Last night’s second cancellation occurred while SINE, the opener was on stage at The Plaza Live. Not wanting to completely let fans down, especially a second time, Bassist David J was resolute that the show must gone on and decided to perform an improvised Bauhaus set—enlisting SINE and Curse Mackey (Pigface, Clan of Xymox, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult.) to join the rest of the band on stage.

Curse and SINE had never performed with David, nor Guitarist Mark Thwaite, and Drummer  Marc Slutsky. There was no time for rehearsal either, as they all had limited time to get the performance set up and ready.

In the end the crowd was upset Peter did not perform, with some leaving after the announcement, but by the end the many that remained were pleased with the performance, especially given the circumstances.

Here is the official statement regarding last Night’s  Concert:

Orlando, Plaza Live – April 4

It is with great regret that the decision was made that Peter Murphy would not be able to perform last night at the 11th hour as he is suffering from severe physical and mental exhaustion. Peter had begun to feel unwell after the triumphant San Francisco Regency Ballroom performance. He pushed himself through for Santa Ana, CA (the 93rd show since October) but unfortunately faltered for the last night in Orlando.

We would like to express our deepest regrets that Orlando was thwarted by illness yet again. We extend our sincere gratitude to David J, MGT Thwaite, Marc Slutsky, all at the venue and crew as well as Rona Rougeheart and Curse Mackey for pulling together to provide a unique and heartfelt show for the audience. We know it was not the one you hoped for but we hope you enjoyed it. It was for you, Orlando.

Thank you to everyone all over the world who attended the 40 years of Bauhaus Celebration.

Despite the impromptu performance refunds were given to all that attended.

Curse Mackey has solo album called Instant Exorcism Out May 10th on Negative Gain.
SINE’s new album INSOMNIÆ is out now.

Alternative Pop Maestro Darwin Presents the video for his new single “Dance Alone”

Santa Rosa-based alternative pop artist Darwin presents his new single ‘Dance Alone’, a fantastic synth-led explosion of energy attesting to the strength of human spirit in these surreal and difficult times we are currently living in.

This new single follows up Darwin’s recent We Are Matter EP (February 2020) and 2019’s So Few Comets LP featuring contributions by David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes), Brian Liesegang (Nine Inch Nails, Filter, Billy Corgan) and Kerry Brown (Smashing Pumpkins).

Written by Darwin (full name Darwin Meiners), this song was performed and recorded together with Julian Shah-Tayler (a.k.a. The Singularity), who also handled production and mixing. It was mastered by Zeus and Grammy-award-winning producer Robert Margouleff (DEVO, Stevie Wonder) at The Nest Studio in Hollywood.

“Dance Alone was written before the current stay at home orders and was not meant to be related in any way.  Initially, this was to be a song about regret and moving on but it soon morphed into something else,” says Darwin.

“Despite its somber lyrics, I find hope and happiness in the freedom to simply be one’s self regardless if they are alone or not.  Sometimes it’s much easier to do when you’re alone, in fact.”

Straddling several genres simultaneously, Darwin’s music is a welcome addition to 2020’s musical palette. By assimilating new ideas, processes, and instrumentation into his work, Darwin continues to advance as an artist. Often found collaborating with renowned similar-minded artists, his alternative pop sound has a dark, electronic feel rooted in the 80s.

Informed via ethereal introspection, Darwin’s music takes the listener on a sonic voyage that blurs the boundaries between nostalgia and the future. His stunning electronically-driven arrangements that are often complemented with visual art projections that reflect the signs of our times and remind us how rare beauty can be. His work commands attention.

Watch the video for “Dance Alone” below:

As of June 1, ‘Dance Alone’ will be available everywhere digitally, including SpotifyApple Music, and Bandcamp.

Members of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Smiths, Banshees, Bauhaus, and more remake The Mission’s “Tower Of Strength” For Covid-19 Relief

As the ravages of Covid-19 doggedly persist, Wayne Hussey (Sisters of Mercy, The Mission) has enlisted help to create a benefit re-recording of The Mission’s Tower of Strength to assist key workers around the globe.

Hussey says, “When COVID-19 hit I started receiving messages asking ‘why don’t you re-issue Tower Of Strength for the front line workers?’ The song had apparently been adopted as an anthem by some NHS workers, and it got me thinking that I would like to contribute something to the greater cause at this unprecedented time…the only thing I could really contribute is music.”

Hussey consulted bandmates Craig Adams, Mick Brown and Simon Hinkler about the idea — and they all agreed to give up any income from the re-recording to COVID charities. Hussey’s friend Michael Ciravolo joined the cause, and soon the pair were able to enlist the help of numerous friends and acquaintances. Initially they wondered if recording a more well-known song might have greater reach, but failed to find the magic combination of lyrical fit “without getting too corny.” They settled on Tower of Strength, The Mission’s 1988 hit single, which charted twice in the UK Top 40 and remains their most successful release.

“It is anthemic,” says Hussey.

Original 1988 Release:

The proceeds will be split among COVID-related charities chosen by each of the participants. (A full listing of charities benefitting from the sales of the single are below.)

The roster of musicians is certainly impressive. Contributors include Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Gary Numan, Andy Rourke (The Smiths) Midge Ure (Ultravox), Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees; The Creatures), Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets) Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Richard Fortus and Robin Finck (Guns N’ Roses), Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff) and more.

Bonus: a reunion of Jay and Michael Aston from Gene Loves Jezebel! How did that miracle happen? Michael Ciravolo explains in his blog:

“I guess I take the blame or credit, depends how you look it it of suggesting them. I have remained friends with Michael Aston since being part of the Gene Loves Jezebel Anniversary tour in 1997-1998…Wayne, however, has remained in touch with Jay, as his ‘version’ of GLJ has supported The Mission over the years, even on the most recent pre-Covid tour. So he and I both reached out to our respective Aston and asked them to sing on this…I don’t think this will lead to an Aston brothers reunion, but stranger things have happened. Hopefully, it as least opens the door to some sort of reconciliation, even if it doesn’t include GLJ.”

Dubbed “TOS2020” by ReMission International, the single is available for pre-order and will be released digitally Aug. 28 and on physical media — gold-colored 12-inch vinyl and CD — on Oct. 2. TOS2020 has been renamed to divert funds from the original version. “Because the musical contributions are global our idea is that the proceeds will be divided and distributed equally among all the beneficiaries,” says Hussey.

“Whilst all the versions will be available to listen to on all streaming platforms I’m gonna ask you to help the cause by buying at least the digital package which is priced at only £2.99,” Hussey says. “It’s not much, is it? For the price of a coffee you’ll receive all five versions. Come on, help us to help others.”

Darwin Enlists David J’s Harmonica Skills On “Unkind Lover”

Get ready for a descent into eerie wonder: alt-pop artist Darwin presents Unkind Lover. The eerie track, featuring David J (Love and Rockets, Bauhaus) on harmonica, Dustin Heald on guitar, and producer/collaborator Julian Shah-Tayler (a.k.a. The Singularity),  invokes the spirit of early 80s goth with a modern flair. It is a plodding, insistent, at times bluesy dirge.

The video, inspired by the writing of Dani Burlison, is an unnerving cruise on stormy seas as disembodied lips snarl out the lyrics in a half-spoken, Lynchian drawl. Burlison, who recently released a book of short stories called Some Places Worth Leavingasked her friend Darwin to create music for a spoken word video for Shark Week, which features a character known only as The Unkind Lover. The collaboration proved irresistible to the Santa Rosa musician. “When I saw the final video, it struck me that it would be exciting to develop the music into a song,” says Darwin.

Darwin enlisted the help of Julian Shah-Taylor for the undertaking, as well as his friend Dustin Heald and finally David J. “Having been in a band with him for many years (David J & The Gentleman Thieves), I had gotten used to the sound of that instrument and I knew he would be perfect to put that final touch on it,” Darwin says. The ghostly harmonica wails mournfully over the vocals, repeatedly dashing the proverbial ship upon the jutting rocks. It is a masterpiece of noir.

The cover artwork was created by Mark Gleason. “He had recently finished a painting that perfectly matches the song…I love this tune and think everyone involved did a fantastic job.  It was a real collaboration,” says Darwin.

Unkind Lover will be available 15 September on SpotifyApple Music and Bandcamp.

David J is Sore About The Mournful Treatment of the Whitehouse Rose Garden in his Latest Video

Bauhaus and Love and Rockets’ legendary post-punk bassist David J is sore about the mournful treatment of the Whitehouse rose garden in the video for his acid and biting political ballad”The Rape Of The Rose Garden”.

“This is my response to the abomination that is Melania Trump’s ‘revamp’ of the White House Rose Garden in which all the colour and warmth has been replaced by something resembling a cold and austere neo-fascist parade ground. Even the crabapple trees beloved by JFK and which Jackie Kennedy herself planted have been removed. It struck me that this tasteless ‘renovation’ could be seen as somewhat symbolic of the destruction that her malevolent, narcissistic husband has inflicted upon the country.

‘Is this your country?’ VOTE!”
—David J

Watch the lyric video below:

“The Rape of The Rose Garden” features acoustic rhythm guitar and vocals from David J, piano by Jon Bernstein, violin from Gregory Allison, acoustic lead guitar from Tad Piecka, and percussion by  Brad Dutz.

The song was Produced by David J, and Engineered by Tony Green, and was recorded at Ear Gallery Music, in Los Angeles.

Daniel Ash Says Bauhaus Reunion to Resume in 2022—Plus Announces Ashes and Diamonds

Daniel Ash has made good use of quarantine. As the world shut down and plans to reunite Bauhaus in 2020 got waylaid, the legendary guitarist found time to devote his energy to a myriad of projects..including a new album. In his first-ever podcast interview on Baxie’s Musical Podcast, Ash was in good spirits and cheerfully described the recording of Bela Lugosi’s Dead, his time with Tones On Tail and Love and Rockets, and what mischief he’s been up to during lockdown. He also really despises the “goth” label, but we already knew that. He prefers to operate as if the label is nonexistent, referencing a quote from Siouxsie Sioux stating: “Goth Doesn’t exist”.

“Way back if you called Siouxsie and the Banshees or the Cure goth, it was an insult,” he explains. “I don’t listen to it, I don’t look at that stuff.” He pauses, noting the response itself a cliché, yet acknowledges the practicality behind old-fashioned pigeonholing by labels in order to ‘brand’ artists. He concludes, “I’m way over that!”

Before Bauhaus reunited in late 2019, Ash had been performing songs as Poptone (with Kevin Haskins and his daughter Diva Dompe) from the catalogues of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail. Ash excitedly reminisced about the brief-but-beloved Tones on Tail: “I think we were really breaking new ground with that! If you listen to that stuff now, it sounds like it could have been recorded last week because it’s not in any category at all. What I’m very proud of …is it sounds like it’s from another planet.”

Ash currently finds himself at a point in his life where he can look at his oft-frosty time with Bauhaus (most of the members he’s known since childhood) with a sense of detachment and amusement. With clashing youthful egos, personal differences, and ambitions less of a pressing issue these days, he’s able to see his relationships with these bandmates with greater clarity and wisdom. “We get on and we don’t get on and we get on and we don’t get on,” he said. “It’s OK. It’s doable now because we’re older. It’s not a big deal. … It’s funny, because I’m saying this now, but we might all fall out again in 36 hours, I don’t know. But it’s definitely easier as we get older.”

During the 30 minute interview with Baxie, Ash also reaffirmed that the Bauhaus reunion tour scheduled to occur in 2020 is still in the works. “There’s definitely plans when all this lifts, ” Ash said, noting that it could still be another year until that’s possible. Fingers crossed.

The touring firewalls of Covid have given Ash the opportunity to devote his talents instead toward a new recording project…with fresh blood. The result is Ashes and Diamonds, a collaboration with Sadé’s bassist Paul Denman and PiL’s drummer, Bruce Smith (The Slits, The Pop Group, Rip Pig + Panic).  The plan is to release the album this year and eventually play shows when the restrictions are lifted. “We can’t wait, actually, to get some sort of feedback,” he said. “I must say it’s working out really well. We’ve had time to really craft the songs and get them produced as good as possible because I really hate underproduction unless it’s the Velvet Underground.”

Ash doesn’t describe the new material’s sound so much in the interview, but admits the lyrics are “a bit schizophrenic” and span a myriad of subjects.

“This is a real cliché, but there’s a song about 2020 and it’s a really, really sad song,” he said. “I can’t listen to it at the moment. It’s too sad. it’s a real downer. But we’re tweaking the music so that it’s not a downer, to have a juxtaposition there within the song, because if you have the music and the lyrics down, it doesn’t work. Nobody wants to hear it because it’s too depressing.”

Good to hear from you, Mister Ash.

Peter Murphy Announces Vinyl Reissues For All Solo Releases On Beggars Banquet; New Rarities Album

$

Peter Murphy, a man of magnificent charisma and talent, is an ever-evolving artist whose career and audience span multiple generations. He has inspired scores of imitators, beginning with his work as the lead singer in Bauhaus and the release of Bela Lugosi’s Dead four decades ago.

But being the frontman of the legendary post-punk band credited with giving birth to goth is but a small part of his career.  Now, it’s time to reflect upon the extraordinary solo legacy through which Peter Murphy has blessed us. The Arkive and the High Holy Cheekboned Poet Laureate of Baroque Rock announce the release of all five of his solo releases on Beggars Banquet, as well as the release of a brand new rarities album called The Last And Only Star.

Peter Murphy’s ongoing solo career began in 1986 with the release of Should The World Fail To Fall Apart, a few years after Bauhaus returned to its coffin for the first time. On the musical rebound after leaving Bauhaus and Japan, respectively, Murphy and bassist Mick Karn forged a short-lived, avant-garde dalliance called Dalí’s Car. While certainly interesting and ahead of its time, the two auteurs couldn’t see eye to eye, and Murphy zeroed his songwriting focus inward.

Murphy’s first effort, Should the World Fail to Fall Apart, did not initially generate a huge following, but it did spawn several singles, including a cover of Pere Ubu’s Final Solution that hit the club scene. The record was produced by Ivo Watts-Russell, who was chosen by Peter due to his This Mortal Coil production. 1988’s Love Hysteria fared better in the United States, thanks to heavy video airplay on MTV and two moderately successful singles, All Night Long and Indigo Eyes. Love Hysteria was produced by Simon Rogers, who at the time was also playing with The Fall. It contains eight songs written by Peter with Paul Statham (B-Movie), plus a cover of Iggy Pop’s Funtime.

Murphy’s third solo album, 1989’s Deep, saw him finally propelling into mainstream stardom with his biggest hit Cuts You Up, often included in lists of the greatest alternative singles. Deep also had two additional charting singles – The Line Between the Devil’s Teeth (And That Which Cannot Be Repeat) and A Strange Kind of Love. Produced by Simon Rogers, the critically-acclaimed album is still a fan favorite. Holy Smoke, released in 1992, contained the single The Sweetest Drop, which made it onto the modern rock charts. His last solo album for Beggars, Cascade, gelled after Murphy dissolved his longtime backing band and moved to Turkey with his family. The album is the culmination of a year of soul-searching and re-discovery.

“It confirmed my belief that writing – like painting or any art form – comes from a very silent place that’s not dependent on outside stimulus,” reflected Murphy. “It was like rediscovering the initial innocence and purity that’s there when you join your first band.”

Photo: Alice Teeple

Peter Murphy deeply values and feeds off the energies of his audience and makes sincere connections onstage. In recent years, Peter Murphy soldiered through several multi-night residencies, performing a different album each night. His near-fatal 2019 heart attack onstage in NYC nearly put an end to it all…but he bounced back with grace and determination, taking several months to recover, regain perspective, and repair rifts with his former Bauhaus bandmates to return for live shows, briefly performing with them before the pandemic threw a wrench into the planned tour.

Murphy’s solo albums reflect the more introspective side of such a committed live performer. Each record is pressed on coloured vinyl that thoughtfully reflect the overall oeuvre of the album. The limited releases will emerge in April, in a series of three. You can also purchase all the releases in a box set designed by Chris Bigg.

The box is limited to 500 copies worldwide and is only available from the Beggars Arkive webstore, so get your paws ready and bask in the love.

Cruel World Undead? Festival Hints That it will “Go Forward” in 2022

Is the Cruel World Festival making a comeback in Spring 2022, and more importantly, will it still involve Devo? Or any other of the acts on its mind-blowingly impressive post-punk and new-wave-themed stacked lineup?

On the 5th of June, 2021,  the festival’s social media posted a teaser, with Devo’s Whip It as a soundtrack, showing a notebook with the Cruel World logo, “SPRING 22,” “GO FORWARD” and “MOVE AHEAD.” …Not to mention, a few stars for good luck?

Fingers crossed. The 80s alternative celebration, initially set to feature Morrissey, Bauhaus, Blondie, and Devo, teased a spring return, though at this point it’s not known who remains from the initial lineup. And what a roster! The 2020 festival was also set to highlight Echo & The Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, Violent Femmes, The Church, The English Beat, Public Image Ltd., Gary Numan, Marc Almond, She Wants Revenge, Blaqk Audio, TR/ST, Cold Cave, Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel, Berlin, Bad Manners, Missing Persons, London After Midnight, Drab Majesty, 45 Grave, Christian Death, The Meteors, Black Marble, Sextile, Softkill, and The KVB.

The Cruel World Festival was originally was to have taken place in May of last year at the home of the LA Galaxy: The Grounds at Dignity Health Sports Park, but after a COVID delay, the gathering got canned by promoter Goldenvoice.
